Preparing to Collaborate

Abstract

Given the effort required for successful cross-organizational collaboration, asking “Should we collaborate on this?” and then “With whom?” is important before embarking on the journey. We have already highlighted the pressure on resources and the ever-increasing expectations of stakeholders as the main drivers behind the quest to engage with partners. In the preceding chapter, we suggested eight major outcome-focused areas that hold the potential for achieving collaborative advantage. We outlined the seven principal activities that require significant effort and resources in order for collaborative work to have a successful outcome. However, most organizations with experience of collaborative work emphasize the fundamental importance of the preparation phase, and in particular the importance of picking the right partner(s).
