The Religious Climate

Abstract

The great issues in moral philosophy in the 18th century reflected major changes in British society. Christian moral precepts were more concerned with preparation for the afterlife in heaven than with this one on earth, except indirectly: what you did in this life determined what happened to you in the next. Residual grievances about others were comforted by what would happen to them for their earthly sins.
