Abstract

This chapter draws together key findings and trends of businesses across the three countries. The issues discussed in this chapter highlight how family businesses in different areas of the Asian Diaspora respond to challenges of inter-generational succession. The range of differences in terms of migration and settlement across the countries illustrate how members of the community integrate over generations and the impact this has on business and family dynamics. The field of family business research has increasingly acknowledged the importance of family-immediate, extended and wider kinship networks in the survival and development of businesses. This has been emphasised by the increasing activity on research in the field of social capital and ethnic embedded networks (Kloosterman et al., 1999; Janjuha-Jivraj, 2004a).
