Abstract

From Gaudi’s organic, fantasy-driven, Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona to Philippe Starck’s chic, playful and surreal Sanderson hotel in London’s West End, design and architecture have constantly provided examples of inspired, visionary and transformational creativity. However, they have also provided the world with creative turkeys of such magnitude that we often gasp at their apparent ineptitude or lack of insight into the needs of clients, end users or society. As many a designer or architect will tell you ‘Doctors bury their mistakes but we have to live with ours’. Unfortunately, people have a tendency to remember and even revel in failure rather than focusing on the multitude of benefits these disciplines have brought us. This problem, combined with numerous celebrity designers and the occasional prima donna, has generated a negatively embedded perception of design agencies and architectural practices.
