Abstract

The previous chapters introduced trust as an appropriate subject of study within entrepreneurship and highlighted the difficulties of achieving an adequately holistic definition of the concept, before considering the philosophical presuppositions underlying the research with which this book concerns itself. A conceptual theory of trust was proposed, whereby interpersonal trust was construed as type of tacit knowledge which comes into play in order to compensate for any lack of other types of more explicit knowledge, and thereby reduces the complexity of the management process. This was in order to provide a holistic location of trust within mainstream management theory, thereby overcoming the problems of locating an historically ill-defined concept. This conceptualisation provides a starting point for a more detailed discussion of trust, aimed at developing an applicable framework of trust types which, in turn, will enable an identification of what types of trust are at work in the small business setting. The main aims of this chapter, therefore, are to: (1) elicit and discuss criteria for distinguishing between types of situational trust that may be at work in the small business; (2) derive a theoretical typology of situational trust types applicable to the small business setting; and (3) suggest a set of identifying characteristics of each type for the purposes of empirical study.
