Abstract

Coaching comprises both caring criticism and development help. Assessment processes embrace both. This chapter takes an overview of the first critical step in any coaching assignment, assessment. Whether it is done informally or through more structured and overt procedures, it’s hard to conceive of coaching taking place without some assessment featuring before, during and after a typical assignment. Here we look at what to expect, what options confront coaches and what might constitute best practice. Effective assessment is fundamental to successful coaching. It is typically conducted differently by coaches but aims to establish a starting point for development, both in terms of identifying a target development area and quantifying where this point may be. In addition, assessment provides the coach with insight into the individual that can be invaluable in informing the development style and content.
