Abstract

In the process of managing a firm’s knowledge, the first steps must be to identify the knowledge it has and to perform a preliminary evaluation of its competitive features. In this chapter, we address the problem of how to identify a firm’s knowledge. What we know and how much we know are the two basic issues that we seek to answer and are usually among the first questions that the authors consider when they want to know more about a company. And the range of answers we find is very broad. Most firms are unable to come up with a quick answer. In fact answering these questions is by no means a trivial undertaking and requires a fairly elaborate process.
