Abstract

As Lula’s (maybe first) presidential term draws to a close1, assessments of his administration are bound to diverge. A few analysts, mostly those connected to the Workers’ Party (PT), consider it to have been an unqualified success so far. A few others, in contrast, evaluate Lula’s policies in an extremely rash way, a betrayal of his past promises and commitments. In-between, the mainstream seems to be very uncomfortable with the corruption charges levelled against the federal government, somewhat critical of its social policies, considered to be paternalistic, but mostly happy with its conservative economic policies despite their poor overall achievements so far.
