The Nimble Survivors: Sperry Rand, NCR, Burroughs, CDC and Honeywell

Abstract

In the 1960s, it was IBM and the Seven Dwarfs, those firms which competed against Big Blue. These were RCA, GE, Sperry Rand (UNIVAC), NCR, CDC, Honeywell and Burroughs. In addition, in Europe, there were electronics and business machines firms targeting their domestic markets. By the 1970s, it was IBM and the BUNCH: Burroughs, Sperry Rand (UNIVAC), NCR, CDC and Honeywell, and a few survivors in Europe, or at least that was the stereotype of the market. In reality it was more complex. In the Dwarf period, a number of firms tried to enter the burgeoning market. Some were major companies, such as the Ford-owned Philco and the large electrical company, often associated with connectors and avionics, Bendix, which both had short forays into the sector. More importantly, CDC established itself as the leading supercomputer maker and Digital Equipment and SDS established the minicomputer markets.
