Some Service Industries

Abstract

Within most industrial countries the tertiary or service sector overshadows, by a very wide margin, the combined contribution of primary and secondary industries to both national output and employment. In this respect, Japan is no exception (see Table 13.1). Its service sector does, however, manifest certain traits which are more or less unique to Japan, some of which are beneficial, whilst others are rather problematic. Instead of reviewing the sector as a whole, we have decided to survey a few of the country’s leading tertiary industries. Those selected include distribution, education and health.
