Abstract

Project management is a key role needed to support the four fundamental business processes. The overall project manager, often referred to as the programme director, is responsible for ensuring that significant initiatives in customer development, product introduction, supply-chain management, and distribution processes are planned, supported by adequate resources and deliver the agreed benefits. This coordinating activity is normally assigned to a small team of experienced project managers capable of linking initiatives across different business activities, national or international locations. In most instances, project managers become experienced in specific business processes and prefer to manage similar activities. However, the project manager must be accountable to several managers or directors - the project owner, the business process manager who owns the resources, and the programme director with overall responsibility for delivering projects on time and within committed budgets. This group then forms the core steering group, taking overall ownership of the project.
