Abstract

What would you rather have? A business with unique physical resources such as access to special materials or processes protected through patents but with a stock of average managers or, on the other hand, a business with little to differentiate its physical base but with committed, outstanding people? The question is rhetorical because most people recognise that competitive advantage derived from physical assets is seldom maintained in the long run. On the other hand, people really do make a difference to delivery in the longer term.
