Abstract

From the end of World War II until the mid-1970s, Keynesian macroeconomics dominated the discipline of economics, and developed economies performed extremely well. On every important measure of economic performance — unemployment, inflation, productivity growth and rising living standards — the 1950s, the 1960s and the early 1970s were a Golden Age of capitalism. Economic life was getting better and Keynesian economics was thought to be responsible for this (see Cornwall, 1994).
