Cultural Diversity in South East Europe

Abstract

Discussions of cultural differences within South East Europe could cover many dimensions of culture, but this chapter will focus on three topics: first, the main divisions with regard to ethnic identities and their bases; second, some of the most important causes of cultural differences both between and within ethnic groups, on the basis of previously published research; and, third, evidence from social surveys about differences in attitudes and values across countries and ethnic groups in the South East Europe (SEE) region within their European contexts, paying particular attention to the complicated situation in the Western Balkans. The differences in attitudes and values concentrate on religiosity, moral values, gender role attitudes and attitudes towards ethnic relations.
