Abstract

In 1759 Arthur Guinness, at the age of 34, signed a lease for 9000 years (that’s not a typing error, it was a nine-thousand year lease) on an old disused and poorly equipped brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin.1 The deal was closed with the payment of £100 plus an annual rent of a further £45. This rent included decisive rights over the water supply, of vital importance for brewing. The brewery covered 4 acres (1.62 hectares).
