Abstract

Wahaha,* a leading food and beverage company in China, had 2006 revenues of RMB18.7 billion (US$2.5 billion).1 At the time, it was the fifth largest beverage company by revenue in the world, after Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Cadbury, and Gatorade. The company’s main products, such as bottled water, fruit milk, and adult milk enriched with calcium and mixed congee† were leaders in the Chinese beverage industry. Wahaha’s milk products and bottled water were in direct competition with its international rivals, which included Unilever and Nestlé.
