Abstract

Europe in crisis: always? This might be a legitimate question if we look at the economic and institutional developments in Europe in the last few years. Yes, of course, one needs to specify which crisis we are talking about, as it is undeniable that the financial crisis, the economic crisis, the fiscal crisis and the institutional crisis are distinct phenomena. Also, one needs to make clear whether these crises interest the European integration process as a whole, the economic and monetary union, or only some countries within it (the ‘PIIGS’). Yet this book presents a view of ‘the crises’ affecting Europe and European countries which, somehow, seems to identify many linkages between them.
