Abstract

India has stated that it believes in an open, equitable, predictable, non-discriminatory and rule-based international trading system and has expressed that the Regional Trading Arrangements are viewed as ‘building blocks’ towards its overall objective of trade liberalization, which complements the multilateral trading system. Initially, India had adopted a very cautious and guarded approach to regionalism and was engaged in only a few bilateral/regional initiatives. In this contexts, we analyse the rules of origin that are being practised in India’s RTAs. While so doing we have also tried to examine how Indian business community has looked at this issue. In this chapter we also apply some of the new concepts that were presented in Chapter 2, to examine empirically the Indian experience with ROO under different RTAs.
