Minsky, Financial Structure and Economic Development

Abstract

Hyman Minsky wrote very little on developing and emerging market economies. His theorising arose from his experience of the American economy from the 1950s until his death in 1996. A central question for us is how far his insights can be adapted to transitional and developing economies. We outline Minsky’s theory of the role of finance in the functioning of the wider economy, against the background of the earlier theory of Keynes, his primary inspiration, and then address this central question.
