Abstract

With very few exceptions, chief executives and would-be chief executives are ambitious individuals, typically with long-term career objectives. In this context, the choice of which jobs to apply for, and whether or not to accept a post if offered it, is crucial. Misjudgements can adversely affect a chief executive’s career trajectory, just as good judgements can substantially enhance it. It is therefore of relevance and interest to explore how chief executives make such judgements. In what circumstances do they apply for and accept a post, and in what circumstances do they withdraw an application or decline an offer?
