Abstract

Standards play a critical role in network industries such as telecommunications, broadcasting, consumer electronics, the Internet, computers, and information systems. They define critical interfaces between complementary products and without the establishment of these standards new markets in the network industries rarely grow. Further, the emergence of a standard has a dramatic effect on competition in these industries. Finns that support the successful interface standard are typically rewarded with increasing market share and profits while the other firms are forced to either adopt the standard or compete in a shrinking market.
