Abstract

As noted in Chapter 1, interest in intranets and the Internet in general, is leading to an interest in the use of the technologies to facilitate various aspects of knowledge management. This issue emerged quite strongly both in the preliminary and main phase of this research, and as will be seen in the case studies, many of the issues that arose from the cases are related to issues of information and knowledge management. As will be seen later, an appreciation of these issues is important in helping to understand the political aspects that accompany the implementation and operation of intranets/extranets. Thus, in order to provide a theoretical basis on which to discuss these topics and to enhance further the understanding of the issues surrounding the use of intranets/extranets, this chapter presents a review of the literature relating to knowledge management.
