Options for Strategic Change: Screwdriver Factories or Integrated Production Systems?

In: Corporate Strategies for South East Asia after the Crisis

Abstract

The economic crisis in Southeast Asia started in July 1997 when the floating of the Thai baht sparked a currency crisis that soon spread to other Asian countries. The evolving economic crisis may have brought to an end the high growth period in Southeast Asia that lasted for decades or, it may only mean a temporary setback leading to economic renewal. In either case, this economic crisis forces Japanese and European firms both to review their investment strategies in the region and to formulate new strategies for the future. They well may need a new conceptual framework for their decision-making process.
