Abstract

No one can predict the future, but it is dangerous not to try to do so, for we base every decision in our lives and in our companies on our image of the future. These are either assumptions about the present, meaning abstractions of reality we consider to be the truth, or assumptions about the future, in which case we are more aware of their uncertain nature. Philosophy, and epistemology in particular, has been concerned with assumptions about the present for millennia. Aristotle, Heraclitus, Descartes, Kant, Popper and Habermas are the great names associated with considerations on the importance of assumptions about the present. Assumptions about the future on the other hand are a relatively new area of research. Every human decision is based on assumptions.
