Abstract

The chapters of this volume provide insights into some of the critical issues confronting the world’s most dynamic economic region—developing Asia. The future of the region is unfolding largely as an economic success: commercial and human development in conditions of rapid and sustained economic growth have become well established. Open capital markets and trade present ample opportunities for financial gains by investors who take a long view. The rich cultural traditions and varying natural environments of the region continue to captivate and entice travelers and businesspeople alike, driving growth forward in services, trade, and investment. The technological advances that have taken place in recent decades are becoming well grounded in the region and create grounds for optimism over the long term. Yet there are serious obstacles on the path forward, and these are analyzed in this volume.
