The International Dimension of Innovation Process: Evidence of Finnish Innovation Data

Abstract

Shortened product life cycles, rapid diffusion of new technology and increasing multidisciplinarity of new technology are shaping business and, at the same time, the innovation environment (Forrest, 1990; Narula, 2004). In order to respond to these challenges companies are often forced to look for external know-how and knowledge sources because of insufficient internal innovation resources (Howells, 1999; Tether, 2002). In order to survive companies need to open up their innovation process and to enter global innovation networks either through setting up their own research and development (R&D) unit, or forming R&D cooperative alliances with external partners (OECD, 2008). Even though it seems that companies’ innovation processes have opened and become more international in recent years (OECD, 2008), innovation data used in this chapter challenges this picture.
