External Use of the South African Rand

Abstract

The rand is the currency of the Republic of South Africa and co-circulates with other currencies in a number of Southern African countries. A formal currency union — the Common Monetary Area or CMA — has been in existence for many years and provides the framework for such co-circulation in three of South Africa’s neighbours. The rand also circulates informally in a number of other countries.
