Abstract

The concept of sustainable development and the general understanding that the environment and the economy are interdependent have aroused increasing interest in recent years amongst political powers and society. The debate about this issue began in the early 1970s, following the publication of D.H. Meadows’ book Limits to Growth, a critique of which was subsequently written by H.S.D. Cole. The discussion—developed and enlarged upon by many other authors in that decade—centered upon whether ongoing economic growth would inevitably lead to environmental degradation and the collapse of society on a global scale. It was partially concluded—though the debate still remains open — that economic development could be sustained on an unlimited basis provided that it was adapted to take into account that, at the end of the day, it depends on the environment and that cleaner ways of consumption and production would be adopted.
