Abstract

There they were, the high priests of the American Economics Association, a score of old men lined up at the head table like the Politburo atop Lenin’s tomb, with the same bad haircuts, black horn-rims and blank expressions. Speaking before this geriatric welcoming committee last week, Alan Greenspan managed to imitate the early Mikhail Gorbachev with surprising flair. I listened and was amazed.
