Abstract

Chapter five examines management theories about interpersonal communication and applying the management skill of communicating accurately and supportively. Communication is the process whereby people transfer their thoughts into symbolic form (encoding), interact with others to convey this message (channel), and then listen to and interpret others’ feedback (decoding). As such it is the bridge that unites us, the bond that links us, the conduit that brings us together— for without it people would simply coexist without the potential to cooperate or collaborate. In the business world, it is how people share information and convey ideas to one another. Think about it—Are we communicating right now? Perhaps. This would depend if I was successful in articulating the ideas from my head onto this paper, if this book is the proper medium for expressing its meaning, and if you are relating to and internalizing its message. Across all of our face-to-face, written, and electronic communications we have, the above three-step model provides a common platform for understanding and managing their processes. Management theories provide a set of essential principles for conducting the communication process that, if applied well, can enhance the success of our interactions. Therefore in this fifth chapter we begin our examination of interpersonal management by looking at how one can better communicate more effectively with people.
