Abstract

With a population of 19.3 million people, New York was the third most populous state in the United States in 2007. From 2000 to 2007 the state’s population increased by 321,272 people, and is projected to increase to 19.5 million by 2025. This 0.1% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. From 2006 to 2007 the state’s population showed a slight decline. The state’s 2007 per capita personal income of $46,664 was higher compared to $43,962 in 2006 and the fifth highest in the United States, some $8,100 above the national average. Per capita income in New York grew at a compound annual rate of 4.2% from 2000 to 2007, compared to 3.7% nationally.
