Abstract

With a population of 683, 478 people, Alaska was the fourth least populous state in the United States in 2007. From 2000 to 2007 the state’s population increased by 56,546 people, and is projected to increase to 820,881 people by 2025. This 1.0% projected annual growth rate is higher than the projected national average of 0.8%. From 2006 to 2007 the state’s population grew by 2.0%. The state’s 2007 per capita personal income of $39,934 was higher compared to $38,622 in 2006 and the fifteenth highest in the United States, some $1,370 above the national average. Per capita income in Alaska grew at a compound annual rate of 4.2% from 2000 to 2007, compared to 3.7% nationally.
