Abstract

Until its spectacular collapse Indonesia was advertised as a resounding success story of the twin liberalizations. These two liberalizations had to do with both the internal and external sectors of the economy. Internally, the financial liberalization that started in the 1980s and continued until the period of the crisis was hailed as a great success. Externally, both trade and capital account liberalization were held up as models for others to follow. By late 1997, the Indonesian economy lay in ruins. What went wrong?
