Abstract

To develop effective policies to govern e-waste management in India, it is critical that we understand the cultural factors that shape this industry. Informal processors have developed effective systems over a period of centuries that yield tangible economic and cultural gains. These benefits are driven by a tight-knit network of community-based professionals who share not only intergenerational technical expertise, but also sophisticated networks and shared values that facilitate a reciprocity-based economic system. This chapter will surface and identify the specific traditions and processes that make this unique system effective. As we dive into this cultural context, we begin to see that informal processors are indeed the mainstream and not a residual or a fringe alternative to the formal economy.
