Abstract

The chapter first reviews the different approaches of economists to peace, to defence, to war and the semantics of the subject. Then the present state of the art and its development is considered, using historical material. The inheritance from Adam Smith is examined, followed by that from F. Y. Edgeworth, and it is found that both have substantial contributions to make to our understanding from their different approaches to questions of war, peace and defence.
