Abstract

In this paper I will focus on the stagflation in the United States during the 1970s and the prospects for the 1980s. For the most part, my remarks summarise the principal findings from several studies which I have conducted jointly with Robert M. Coen concerning the macroeconomic impact of the energy shocks of the 1970s and the extent to which the tax incentives embodied in the Economic Recovery Tax Act (ERTA) of 1981 may be expected to stimulate US growth in the 1980s.
