Abstract

This study examines developments and conditions in the Federal Republic of Germany. It is thus primarily of an empirical character. The subject is treated in terms of three different aspects. First, the impact of technical and structural change1 on the change in employment will be examined, taking account of both macro- and microeconomic factors. Secondly, the effect of technical change on the quality of the labour force will be discussed. Here, changes in the occupational structure and skill requirements are of special interest. Finally, the problem of the acceptance of technical and structural changes by employees and trade unions will be examined.
