Abstract

Our problem is to examine the distribution of national income in African countries. It divides easily into two branches: the distribution of the national income functionally, that is, by factor shares, and the distribution of personal income by size. Each of these two branches has its own special interest for developing countries and particularly for countries that have only recently emerged from colonial or dependent status. Each of them has also been canvassed in the literature but the setting has invariably been in the context of the highly industrialized countries. An analysis of the problem posed can be undertaken for a single country if the data permit of an intertemporal comparison or for a group of countries if the data permit of international comparisons. Neither procedure is easy in African countries and it will be a partial object of this paper to indicate the gaps in the data, the approximations possible in the absence of suitable material and what further work needs to be done to bridge the gap.
