Abstract

The M four countries of West Africa with which we are concerned face much the same problems as do other under-developed countries, with the exception of those which arise from a great density of population. In this paper, I treat the problems of the four countries together, dealing with particular countries only when the difference between them is sufficiently great to make this treatment seriously misleading. The countries are considerably alike in climate and in natural resources; the traditional economies and social institutions are also very similar. Their principal differences arise mainly from the fact that they are at different stages of economic and political development.
