Abstract

While Australia and New Zealand are sovereign states, they have in the 1980s and 1990s pursued sets of trade policies which share many elements and which together represent a style of trade policy that is distinctive. Among the common elements are a fast rate of unilateral reductions in barriers to trade with other nations, a sharp movement away from reliance on quantitative restrictions and other non-tariff instruments of trade restriction, membership of a regional trading arrangement that has achieved virtually complete freedom of bilateral trade and deepened the integration of the two economies, and a strong commitment to multilateralism.
