Abstract

In this paper we are going to make an attempt to trace some main lines of the development of the long-cycles concepts in a historical perspective. Given the diversity and number of publications which have appeared since the concept was first introduced over 100 years ago, as well as the existence of several fundamental reviews (Wein- stock, 1964; Barr, 1979; Delbeke, 1981; Van Duijn, 1983; Goldstein, 1988; and others), we do not intend to provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of all the literature in the field. This task is beyond the limited scope of the present paper. Our purpose is to accentuate several controversial problems which seem to be crucial for the future development of long-cycles studies.
