Reform of the Soviet Price System

Abstract

Rather than presenting an abstract discussion of price reforms in a hypothetical socialist centrally-planned economy, this paper considers the concrete case of the Soviet Union. It examines in turn the three main components of the price system: state industrial producer prices, agricultural producer prices, and retail prices. For each, it briefly analyses some important features of current pricing practice; discusses recent and prospective changes; and, by way of illustration, identifies some unresolved issues.1
