Abstract

In order to understand the phenomenon of militarism in Latin America, we can always retake the Clausewitz maxim as a starting point: War is a continuation of politics by other means. The power politics approach and the ‘struggle for power’ serve us to understand why military force exists and why it is necessary within and among states. Nevertheless, the economic implications of this phenomenon are very often considered only as a result of a political fact.
