Abstract

The Marxian theory of reproduction contains all the basic elements to render it comprehensive, and it may thus serve as a point of departure for a theoretical approach to the concept of development, bearing in mind that its application in practice depends on the existing national conditions. It is of particular value in studying the development problem under the Yugoslav social and economic system, where the application of the basic concepts of the Marxian reproduction theory, as well as of Marxian teachings in other domains such as the theory of the state, has provided an approach to development. Even more, it has led to the adoption of specific development policies, which — while related to the contemporary level of material production and of consequential productive relations — constitute an explicitly Yugoslav contribution to the Marxian theories of reproduction, of the state, and of self-government. Tested in practice, they entail a self-perpetuating process of development which effects the structural transformation of the economy.
