Abstract

The purpose and the scope of the present paper are roughly indicated by its title and by its place among the papers dealing with the process of industrialization. It centres around the following questions: 1. What are the potential analytical merits of the stage approach to the problem of economic development? 2. What appear to be the most relevant criteria for distinguishing among successive stages of economic development and which criteria have already been suggested and applied by students of the process of industrialisation? 3. Given the possibility and expediency of identifying stages with ‘neighbourhoods of equilibrium’ and the intermediary phases with ‘spurts’, what are the basic causes of the latter and the main obstacles to smooth economic development?
