Monopoly and Competition in the Union of South Africa

In: Monopoly and Competition and their Regulation

  • W. F. Steenkamp

Abstract

Thedescription of the market structure of the South African economy contained in the first section of this paper is unfortunately neither comprehensive nor detailed. The reasons for this are, first, that no comprehensive empirical investigation of local monopolistic tendencies has as yet been undertaken. Secondly, as in most other countries, the official census statistics are no safe guide in this matter, mainly because their industry and product classifications are too wide and too uncertain. Moreover, a census of distribution is only now being introduced.
