Abstract

In the 1970s, Bergmann gradually focused her research towards the economic role of women and their contribution to the labor force, further developing her analysis of gender discrimination in the job market, which led her to extend her research from women’s place in the economy to the economics of the family and the economic analysis of marriage. In addition to examining the economic circumstances of women who had limited employment opportunities and full-time responsibilities as mothers, she maintained a continuous interest in the study of child-rearing. As always, she grounded her investigation in the analysis of available data. In fact, her archive contains several datasets on marriage and divorce rates, the relationship between educational level and fertility and divorce, and so forth, mainly published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, starting from the early 1970s (Becchio, 2024a, 2024b).
