The Factor Labour

Abstract

Socialists have a special affinity with labour in its struggle against exploitation and poverty. The Webbs identified the valuable contribution of the unions to countervailing power through collective bargaining and national politics. Like other cooperatives in the corporate state, the unions practiced internal democracy and enhanced the workers’ self-respect. Yet people were a problem. The ‘average sensual man’ was ignorant and apathetic while the political class (including alleged socialists in the new Labour Party) was resistant to major reforms. Radical intellectuals like the Webbs believed that they had a vital role in mobilising public opinion on the side of the needy.
