Abstract

The Webbs combined empirical investigation with political activism. Sidney was a member of the London County Council and later of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. He was instrumental in the establishment of the London School of Economics. Beatrice was a high-profile member of Royal Commissions and committees on the poor laws, service pensions and equal wages for women. Their trips to America and Asia reveal that, despite their essential Britishness, they were open to new impressions.
