Abstract

This chapter traces the early life of the Webbs up to their marriage in 1892. Beatrice (née Potter), born into wealth, troubled by God, active in charity work, came to socialism because she wanted to reform the economy to raise up the poor. Sidney, lower-middle-class, a civil servant, a politician, a Fabian, complemented her skills in research and persuasion and shared her passion for social and economic transformation. Initially a reforming Liberal, he became involved in the new Labour Party despite the reservations both Webbs entertained about its leadership under J. Ramsay MacDonald.
